Invisible Invitations: Amaze your guests with an invitation that seems
to appear right before their eyes.
Needed: white construction paper, toothpick or fine paintbrush, lemon juice or milk, colorful felt-tip pens,
source of light/heat or oven, white crayon.
How to: Fold sheets of white construction paper in half to make cards for all your guests.
Dip a toothpick repeatedly into lemon juice or milk to write birthday info on the inside of the card.
You won't be able to see what you've written so don't forget any details! On the outside, write "Invisible Invitation"
in felt-tip pen. Underneath that, write the following instructions if using lemon juice: Open the invitation and with
a parent's supervision, carefully hold the inside of the invitation over a candle flame or lighter. If using milk, write:
"Bake" the invitation in a warm oven for just a few minutes, until writing appears. Or simply use a white crayon to write
the party details on the white paper, and write: Color over the inside of the invitation to make the message appear.
Magic Wands: Birthday parties are magical, so why not invite your guests with a Magic Wand invitation?
Needed: tagboard or card-stock paper, gold or silver spray paint, glitter, metallic
confetti, sequins, 2-foot, wooden dowel rods for each guest, 2-foot piece of ribbon for
each guest, small bells, felt-tip pens, scissors, glue, stapler.
How to: For each guest, cut out a star shape from the tagboard and spray paint it with
gold or silver paint. Before the paint dries, sprinkle ONE side of it with glitter, metallic confetti,
or sequins. Allow to dry. On the non-glitter side, write the party details with the felt-tip
pens. Staple each star to a wooden dowel. Tie a piece of ribbon to each dowel, just under
the star. Attach a small bell at the end of the ribbon. Mail in long rectangular boxes, large
padded envelopes filled with confetti, or hand deliver to guests.
Amazing Swami: Mystify the party with the Amazing Swami act! No matter what
card you choose, the Swami always knows!
Needed: deck of cards, telephone, someone to play the part of Swami.
How to: Before the party begins, arrange a code with a friend or relative who will not be
at the party at the time of this trick, and who'll play Swami. Tell Swami that when you call
on the Telephone you'll say: "Could I speak to the Amazing Swami?" This will alert Swami that
it's time for the trick. Ask someone from the group to pick a card from the deck and show
it to everyone (including yourself). Tell the group you are going to call the Amazing
Swami and have him guess the card. Then, when you say to him, "Could I speak to the Amazing
Swami?" Swami should begin counting slowly from ace to king. When Swami reaches the number
of the card, you quickly interrupt Swami with a second sentence:"Hello Swami!" This interruption
lets Swami know what number is on the chosen card. Swami immediately begins to recite the four
suits. When he says the correct suit, you quickly interrupt again and say, "Tell my friend the
card he has picked from the deck." Hand the phone over to the guest so he can listen to
Swami reveal the card!
